Spello is a beautiful, relatively undiscovered hilltop town in Umbria, where I was lucky enough to spend a week with family this August in this stunning 3 bedroom Umbria villa. Given that, 8 weeks on, we’re still talking about what a wonderful holiday it was, it only seems right to share the experience with our readers…
I have to admit that, travelling with children aged 9 and 12 as well as with my husband and parents, I wasn’t sure whether the location would be suitable for a multi-generational holiday but, in hindsight, it couldn’t have been any better! In fact, I would even go so far as to say this was one of the best holidays we have ever taken as a family.
The location was perfect. Being in the heart of the town, there were a host of wonderful restaurants literally on our doorstep. Not once did we need to trek to the local supermarket, but instead brought the few provisions we needed at the local alimentari. Even this was a magical experience. Within a few days, my daughter was taking samples of her freshly-baked, home-made bread to the owner to sample and, in return, he was generous in giving her a plentiful supply of Italian sweets!
Rather than cooking for ourselves, we chose instead to eat out every night to sample the amazing cuisine that this region of Italy is known for. And what an abundance of choice there was at night. With at least a dozen restaurants all within an easy walk of the villa, we were spoilt for choice. Favourites included La Cantina and La Bastiglia. The terrace at the latter was simply breathtaking, whilst the ambience and character of the former was infectious…. we just kept having to go back for more! Service at both was impeccable and the standard of cuisine just unbeatable…. whilst all at a ridiculously low price for the quality.
The pool at the property kept the children entertained for hours, whilst the garden and views made for a relaxing and peaceful spot for the adults to sunbathe and read a book. Each day was spent in a similar vein…. a few hours by the pool combined with a trip to one of the local towns to explore. Umbria may not have the big cities on the scale of those in neighbouring Tuscany, but it does have a multitude of immaculately kept hilltop towns that are a pleasure to explore, amongst them Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto, Bevagna, Montelfalco and Trevi. All captured our hearts as we walked their cobbled streets, visited their historic attractions and shopped in their boutiques. And each were enjoyed by young and old alike.
So, would we return? Most definitely and sooner rather than later! Spello is a little piece of heaven which I will definitely be returning to in a hurry! We’re already checking holiday dates for next Summer as the one thing I can be certain of is that these properties won’t be available for long… they always get booked up sooner rather than later.
