Things to do on a luxury holiday in Montepulciano

We recommend you enjoy a few hours simply wandering the streets of Montepulciano, stopping to admire the many historic buildings and museums that it is home to.

Montepulciano is filled with historic churches, beautiful palaces, picturesque alleyways and idyllic piazzas. Whilst the town has origins dating back to the Etruscan period, much of what you see today is thanks to the work of the Renaissance artists. Nowhere is this more evident than in Montepulciano’s main piazza, the Piazza Grande. Here, the 14th-century Palazzo Comunale was given a Renaissance makeover by Michelozzo, in a sort of homage to the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

And the Palazzo Contucci, which stands opposite, was designed by Italian Renaissance architect Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. He also designed the Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi in this square. And the Duomo was also constructed in the Renaissance period of the 16th century.

No luxury holiday to Montepulciano would be complete without also sampling some of the Sangiovese wines grown in this area. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s greatest red wines and has been awarded DOCG status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). There are shops in the centre where you can enjoy a tasting. Alternatively, since the grapes are grown to the east and northeast of the town, you could head into the countryside and visit one of the wineries in person for a tasting.

Frequently asked questions about booking a luxury holiday in Montepulciano

Is Montepulciano a good base for exploring the rest of Tuscany?

Montepulciano is a great base for exploring the rest of Tuscany. Just 20 minutes from Pienza, within a 40-minute drive of Cetona and Cortona and an hour by car from Siena, it’s the perfect base to discover some of Tuscany’s most famous cities, towns and villages. However, it is also a great base for exploring neighbouring Umbria too. Just 15 minutes from the border, a Montepulciano villa holiday allows you to discover equally picturesque Umbrian towns including Orvieto and Perugia as well as the charming shores of Lake Trasimeno.

Can your team arrange private culinary experiences at our villa?

Definitely! In fact, we would encourage you to enjoy a private-chef experience during your stay at one of our Tuscany villas. We work with some incredible local chefs. Whether you fancy sampling the cooking of an experienced nonna, prefer traditional Tuscan fare or are in search of contemporary Michelin-standard cuisine, we have a variety of chefs we can recommend.

What makes Vino Nobile di Montepulciano different from other Tuscan wines?

Made primarily with Sangiovese grapes, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s greatest red wines. Awarded DOCG status, wines must be a minimum of 70% Sangiovese but can also include the addition of other varieties. The prized grapes are grown to the east and northeast of the town. Surprisingly good value for money – expect to find bottles starting from as little as 8 euros per bottle in Italian supermarkets – the wine is highly regarded in Italy.
