Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches in Sicily. They range from pebbled coves to long stretches of sand. In fact, we think that some of Italy’s best beaches are to be found in Sicily. Sicily can boast nearly 1500 kilometres of coastline just waiting to be discovered. With temperatures warm enough to enjoy swimming in the sea as early as April and May, there is plenty of time each year to enjoy Sicily’s beaches to the full.
What constitutes a good beach will vary from person to person. For us, a good beach is characterised by clean white sand, bordered with crystal clear waters and is relatively free of other holidaymakers! However, we fully appreciate that others may want something a lot livelier. Or perhaps you’re simply after a beach where you can sit back and watch the sun set.
Our top beach for watching the sun set in Sicily is definitely the Scala dei Turchi (Staircase of the Turks). Absolutely stunning white limestone cliffs, these are named after the Turkish and Moorish pirates who landed here centuries ago. Over time, they have been eroded into steps by the wind and sea. These striking white cliffs now contrast with the fine sandy beach and turquoise sea below. Without doubt, there can be no more romantic or magical place to watch the sun setting each evening. Top tip – we would advise you to wear sensible shoes.
If you’re in the north-west of Sicily, head to a small but charming bay in Scopello. Here you’ll find an idyllic rocky beach made all the more picturesque by an old pink-coloured 13th century tonnara (tuna fishery). Centuries ago, the site inspired Homer’s writings in The Odyssey. It’s still inspiring people today. More recently it has formed the backdrop for TV programmes such as Inspector Montalbano and films such as Ocean’s Twelve.
For families with children, the beach at San Vito lo Capo is one of our favourites. About a kilometre long, the Monte Monaco forms a dramatic backdrop behind it. It’s a beach that’s popular more with Italians than tourists which is another reason we like it so much.
And don’t forget that Sicily’s islands also have some incredible beaches to discover too. These include the Spiaggia dei Conigli (Rabbit Beach) on the island of Lampedusa and the Cala Faraglione beach on the island of Levanzo.
