How to find the perfect villa in Italy

How to find the perfect villa in Italy

There are so many villas in Italy to choose between. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. From rustic farmhouses in the countryside to magnificent lakeshore villas, and from grand houses in the city to luxury villas by the sea, holidaymakers really are spoilt for choice when it comes to finding the perfect villa rental in Italy.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to finding the best villa in Italy. But, to make your job that little bit easier, here is our list of the top things you need to consider when choosing your perfect villa in Italy.

1. Location

First things first, you need to decide where in Italy you want to go. Italy is made up of 20 different regions and it’s important to remember that Italy as it is today didn’t even exist until the country was unified in 1861. As a result, a holiday in Puglia is almost a world apart from a holiday in Tuscany. The two regions could almost be in two completely different countries. Likewise, a week in Sicily has little in common with a week in the Italian Lakes. Do you want to stay somewhere off the beaten track or do you want to be busy ticking off your bucket list of Italian tourist attractions?!! When it comes to location, you also need to decide on whether you’d rather be in the countryside or in the city. And have a think about whether you want to be within walking distance of amenities or whether you’re happy to be more isolated. Both options can have their advantages and disadvantages. Take a look at our guide to where to stay in Italy for inspiration on the best region for you.

2. Price

The good news is that renting a villa in Italy can be much cheaper than opting for hotel accommodation, particularly if you’re staying as part of a larger group. It’s always a good idea to set a budget though. Think about other costs you need to consider, not just your accommodation. The most important ones are your travel arrangements such as flights and car hire but, if you’re working to a budget, also think about how much spending money you want to have during your stay for excursions and eating out.

3. Size

It may sound silly but make sure that the villa you choose is big enough to accommodate everyone. It may appear to do so on paper if you look at sleeping capacity but some villas in Italy have very large rooms! In other words, a 4 bedroom villa in Italy may sleep up to 12 guests. Perhaps one room sleeps four and then perhaps another two guests are accommodated on a sofa bed. That’s fine if you’re happy with that arrangement but if you’re a group of 6 couples, it probably would’t be ideal!

4. Style

Villa rentals in Italy come in all shapes and sizes and also offer an eclectic mix of styles to choose from too. Italians have a love and appreciation of history and many of the homes available to rent may have been in their families for generations. As a result, you’ll often find homes filled with antiques and furnishings that have been loved by them for years. Others may be much more modern. Italy has a reputation for excellence when it comes to interior design and there are lots of villas in Italy which have been given an incredible contemporary makeover. Italian design has always been about quality and craftsmanship though and its style is timeless whether you choose antique or modern day.

5. Find a reputable villa rental company or trusted villa owner to book with

It may sound silly but make sure you do your homework when it comes to who to book your Italy villa with. Whether you’re choosing to book directly with the owner or through a company, check their credentials. Look at reviews and take the time to find out what previous guests have thought of their experience.
