Traveling by train to Sorrento is a slow travel treat. Using this local line, which we admit is not the fastest train in Europe, you will pass both Mount Vesuvius and see this beautiful corner of the Amalfi Coast all in one trip. This direct link takes around 1hr – depending on which provider you choose, with faster trains operating at a more premium fare.
We always recommend booking tickets in advance at Trainline, where you can opt for an e-ticket to store on your phone and help the environment too, by going paper-free. Trainline also allows you to see all rail operators on a route and easily compare journey times, routes and prices.
Sorrento itself has everything you need for a car-free holiday but if you’d like to explore further afield, remember that as well as the trains, there are also regular boats sailing to Capri, Ischia, Positano and Naples. In all these destinations you can enjoy tours and activities to keep the whole family entertained, from a tour of Capri’s blue grotto to a fascinating trip into Naples’ underground tunnels to admire the remains of the Greek-Roman aqueduct and the Roman theatre.
