About Milan
For too long, Milan did not feature on the typical tourist trail. Instead, it was overshadowed by nearby Verona or even Venice. However, that has now all changed and its appeal has finally begun to be recognised. Milan is certainly an important centre for business. However, Italy’s most fashionable city also offers up some real art and architectural gems and boasts a fantastic food scene too.
What to see and do in Milan
There is no shortage of things to see and do in Milan. A good starting point for any visit to Milan is its central square – the Piazza del Duomo. This is home not just to the beautiful cathedral but also the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the Museo del Novecento. This houses an array of important 20th century artworks by artists such as Picasso, Kandinsky and others. This juxtaposition of contemporary art side by side with two of Milan’s most iconic historic buildings sums up Milan perfectly – a harmonious fusion of history and modernity.
Next on your list of things to do in Milan must be visits to some of the many museums that the city is home to. In total there are over 80 museums in Milan if you include galleries, church and private collections. Some of the most famous include those within the Sforzesco Castle such as the Pinoteca, Egyptian Museum and Museum of Ancient Art. There is also a small but fascinating museum at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan’s world-famous opera house. And many of the churches in Milan are home to incredible paintings, frescoes and other works of art. At the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie is the most famous of these – Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. However, you’ll need to be super organised and book tickets in advance if you want to see it during your stay.
As the fashion capital of the world, there is ample opportunity to enjoy some shopping in Milan too. The city is a shopoholic’s dream. Designer shops can be found in the affectionately termed Quadrilatero d’Oro but there are plenty more affordable options. Head to the Corso Vittorio Emanuele and around Via Torino on the other side of the Duomo.
If the weather is nice, then we also recommend visiting at least one of the many parks and gardens in Milan too. The Parco Sempione is the most famous of these. We also suggest you visit the Bibliteca degli Alberi Park. It is close to the Bosco Verticale, an incredible example of a green residential building that sums up the innovative side of the city.

When to visit Milan
Just as there is no shortage of things to see and do in Milan, in many respects, there is no bad time to visit the city either. After all, even if the weather isn’t on your side, there are plenty of things to do in Milan when it’s raining. And throughout the year, you’ll always find Milan to be lively. However, if you are travelling to the city on holiday, there are times best avoided. These include Fashion Week and Design week (also called Salone del Mobile). At this time, you’ll find accommodation prices at a real premium and the city extremely busy.
We would also suggest visiting in the Spring, Autumn or even Winter months rather than in peak Summer.
You’ll tend to find the best value accommodation in Milan between January and March. Temperatures at this time are chilly. This is the ideal time to wrap up warm and explore the sights of Milan without having to battle through crowds of tourists.
In April, temperatures start to get warmer but this is the month when Milan hosts Design Week as well as the most famous furniture fair – the Salone Internazionale del Mobile – so expect to pay peak prices.
May is the best month to visit Milan. Typically, May offers the perfect weather for sightseeing and without too many crowds. May also sees Cortili Aperti. Many private historic properties in Milan are only opened to the public during these days, giving you the chance to see even more in the city.
June is also a great month to visit Milan. Just be aware that crowds start to build as the month progresses.
July and August can become uncomfortably hot and humid for sightseeing. Moreover, whilst you may be guaranteed plenty of sunshine, you’re also guaranteed the crowds too during this school holiday season. That said, there is plenty to see and do indoors where air conditioning will keep you cool.
September through to November will still have a buzz about it after the Summer. However, many people in Milan at this time are there for work not pleasure so attractions like the Duomo should be that little bit quieter.
December is also a lovely time to visit thanks to the festive lights that sparkle throughout the city. Milan also plays host to one of Italy’s largest and most popular Christmas markets so it’s a great time to get that last minute Christmas shopping done.
