Lake Monate is a small Italian lake measuring just 3 km long and 1 km wide. It sits in the province of Varese in the region of Lombardy, not far from nearby Lake Maggiore. The setting of the lake is idyllic, surrounded by forests and fields. The waters of Lake Monate are considered some of the cleanest of any of Italy’s lakes. You won’t find any motorised water sports on the lake but it’s ideal for bathers and those happy to take a more sedate pace in a rowing boat, canoe or pedalo. It was a popular holiday resort at the start of the 20th century. These days, it is a hidden gem in the Italian Lakes. Find yourself a lakeside villa and you will have a private stretch of Lake Monate all to yourself.

About Lake Monate

Few holidaymakers have heard of Lake Monate but it really is a little gem just waiting to be discovered. It offers the perfect getaway for those looking to truly escape from the hustle and bustle of normal life and who want to enjoy a peaceful escape and an opportunity to connect with nature. The lake sits between Lake Maggiore and Varese. In fact, at the closest point, it is only 4 km from the shores of Lake Monate to those of Lake Maggiore.

The largest town on Lake Monate is Travedona-Monate. The other towns on Lake Monate are Cadrezzate, Comabbio, and Osmate.

What to see and do on Lake Monate

Lake Monate has the cleanest waters of any lake in Italy. This is because its rather unique in that its fed by an underground spring. As a result, it’s the perfect spot for those who want to relax lakeside and enjoy plenty of swimming. There are a number of public and private beaches on Lake Monate. Many of the public ones are around the towns of  Travedona-Monate and Cadrezzate. Whilst motorised water-sports are not permitted, you will find that there are canoes and pedaloes available to hire so that you can get out on the lake waters. Even better is if you opt to stay in a lakeside villa on Lake Monate – that way you will essentially enjoy private lake access during your holiday.

Lake Monate villasNature lovers will be delighted at the number of trails around Lake Monate which can be enjoyed by both hiking and cycling enthusiasts. Less than 3 km away from Lake Monate sits Lake Comabbio. Here holidaymakers can enjoy the 28 km cycle path that winds around its perimeter.

Due to its proximity to Lake Maggiore, a stay on Lake Monate is also an ideal location to enjoy all the things to do on Lake Maggiore.

When to visit Lake Monate

With a climate identical to the weather on Lake Maggiore, visitors can expect to enjoy the warmest and sunniest weather in July and August. This is when you will be able to maximise your time on the beaches and in the lake waters. However, the Spring and Autumn also work well for a holiday on Lake Monate. This is when you can typically combine lazy days in the sunshine with plenty of sightseeing. Plus, in the Winter months, you can enjoy skiing and hiking on nearby Lake Maggiore.
