Just 6 km from the heart of Varese itself is Lake Varese. The lake covers an area of  14.5 km² and is just 23 metres deep at its deepest point. Whilst it is not suitable for swimming, it is ideal for keen canoeists and also for cyclists. The latter can enjoy the 30 km cycle path that weaves its way around its perimeter.

The scenery as you cycle around is certainly wonderful. Lake Varese is a nature reserve with one of the best preserved examples of a lowland peat bog. It is home to numerous species of flora, fauna, animals and birds. In fact, it is home to approximately 170 species of birds, among them the tufted duck, bittern and purple herons.
