Montepulciano is a charming hilltop town in the province of Siena in Tuscany. Equally famous for its Renaissance artworks as for its wines, the town should be a stopping point on any tour of Tuscany. It plays host to numerous events throughout the year, many of which revolve around its rich culinary and agricultural heritage. In short, there is no bad time to visit this charming Tuscan town.
These Montepulciano villas are all within a 20 km radius of Montepulciano.
EXCELLENT Based on 50 reviews Miki Leibowitz2024-10-20Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Cassina Rossa in Forte Dei Marmi was a perfectly located villa to enjoy all things Forte & truly feel like a local! The communication with the owner and her representatives was so easy and they were VERY helpful with anything we needed during our stay. We so enjoyed waking up every morning and either taking our coffee intown while it was super quiet and watching everything wake up around us or on most mornings we rode the bikes that were supplied to us to the wonderful market that was literally down the street and picked up anything we needed fresh for the day. The kitchen was beautifully equipped and we made espresso most mornings and either sat outside on ground level patio or on the roof top overlooking the mountains. It was comfortable enough to have lunch and dinner at home a couple of times and fun setting a beautiful table with their pretty dishes, linens, etc. Having Bagno Vasco the very authentic classic beach club included was a dream and a big savings! Great food, easy location to bike or drive to and the position of our chairs, umbrella and sunbed right next to the sea was great. We were there for over 2 weeks and for a nominal amount he supplied us with their towels each day so we didn’t have to bring back and forth. The villa’s proximity to the center of town can’t be beat. It’s quiet enough to be a bit removed and beautiful to see the mountains whenever walking or riding home but so close to all the wonderful restaurants & very upscale & unique shops. Forte has such a unique vibe day and night especially on market days (Wednesday and Sunday). The markets are so full of clothing, housewares, etc that you’ll need to bring an extra bag or ship stuff home. People come from everywhere to take advantage of it. The location of Forte Dei Marmi is so central and close to other towns like Pietrasanta up in the hills which allows you to experience a completely different more typically Tuscan area within a short 15-20 min drive and it’s also very close to Lucca, Pisa & Carrara (where they get the marble) only 1 1/2 hours from Florence and Portofino if you are staying longer and want to take some wonderful daytrips. Forte Dei Marmi doesn’t have the dramatic coastline of the Amalfi coast but the beauty of looking one direction and seeing the beaches and looking the other and seeing the stunning mountains including Carrara is truly unique and offers its own special beauty. Another plus is that it is very flat so much easier than many Italian towns to walk and ride bikes which everyone does everywhere. It’s fun to see everyone (mostly Italians which we loved) fully dressed for dinner on bikes as it’s truly the chosen form of transportation for the young and old. We can’t wait to return!! Bookings for You provided excellent communication with us both prior to and during the trip to ensure that everything ran as smoothly as possible for us. The apartment was great: comfortable, very well equipped and the terrace was fabulous with a seating area for meal times, comfortable loungers to relax on and down the steps, loungers beside the pool. All having magnificent views across the valleys. Highly recommended! Rob Aherne2024-09-02Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fabulous stay in Villa Assisi - a big villa with private pool in a hotel resort complex. It was very peaceful, despite a very central location, and the pool was a fantastic luxury given the super-hot temperatures. We were able to use the hotel facilities, such as the tennis court and bicycles, as well, so it felt like the best of both worlds. We were well looked after by Bookings for You too. Highly recommended. evan sohun2024-08-19Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. An amazing place. Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s most charming hilltop villages, situated within the Siena region of Tuscany. Set amid the breathtaking scenery of the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana, its historic centre is incredibly picturesque.
We recommend you enjoy a few hours simply wandering the streets of Montepulciano, stopping to admire the many historic buildings and museums that it is home to.
Montepulciano is filled with historic churches, beautiful palaces, picturesque alleyways and idyllic piazzas. Whilst the town has origins dating back to the Etruscan period, much of what you see today is thanks to the work of the Renaissance artists. Nowhere is this more evident that in Montepulciano’s main piazza – the Piazza Grande. Here, the 14th century Palazzo Comunale was given a Renaissance makeover by Michelozzo, in a sort of homage to the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. And the Palazzo Contucci which stands opposite was designed by Italian Renaissance architect Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. He also designed the Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi in this square. And the Duomo was also constructed in the Renaissance period of the 16th century.
No visit to Montepulciano would be complete without also sampling some of the Sangiovese wines grown in this area. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s greatest red wines and has been awarded DOCG status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). There are shops in the centre where you can enjoy a tasting. Alternatively, since the grapes are grown to the east and north east of the town, if you head into the countryside, you could also visit one of the wineries in person for a tasting.

You’ll find Montepulciano busiest when it’s hosting one of its annual festivals or events. There is something to enjoy every season. In February, things kick off with the annual costumed procession of the Carnevale. This is swiftly followed by a two day festival each March to celebrate all things chocolate! Then, over the Easter weekend, visitors can enjoy a classical music festival with a series of concerts performed in the magical settings of Montepulciano’s churches and palazzos.
May is arguably the busiest time in Montepulciano, due to the fact that both the Fiera di Sant’ Agnese and Cantine Aperte take place in this month. The former is a historical procession through the streets whilst the latter is when wine cellars throw open their doors and offer guided tours and tastings to visitors.
Events continue across the Summer months. In late July, there is the Giostra del Saracino as well as the Barvio delle Botti in August. One of our favourite events, this is when you’ll find barrel racing competitions taking place between the eight contrada.
In the Autumn, you can enjoy the Olive Oil and Autumn Flavours Festival. You enjoyed the wine in May and now you have the opportunity to sample the olive oil!
And finally, stay in one of our Montepulciano villas in December and you can enjoy the Christmas market which fills the Piazza Grande each year. A temporary ice skating rink and other attractions are also set up to ensure is full of festive cheer!
There is no bad time to visit Montepulciano! Our favourite time to stay in one of our Montepulciano villas is in the late Spring to coincide with Cantine Aperte, in the Summer to coincide with Barvio delle Botti or in the early Autumn after the olive harvest so that we can sample the new oil.
Weather wise, in the Summer you can expect plenty of hot, sunny days with daytime temperatures easily rising up to 30℃. Spring and Autumn can still see very pleasant temperatures allowing you to both relax by your Tuscany villa pool or to sightsee without getting up too much of a sweat! And, whilst daytime temperatures may be cooler across the Winter requiring you to wrap up warm, you can still expect plenty of dry days and plenty of sunshine.
