Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s most charming hilltop villages, situated within the Siena region of Tuscany. Set amid the breathtaking scenery of the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana, its historic centre is incredibly picturesque.
We recommend you enjoy a few hours simply wandering the streets of Montepulciano, stopping to admire the many historic buildings and museums that it is home to.
Montepulciano is filled with historic churches, beautiful palaces, picturesque alleyways and idyllic piazzas. Whilst the town has origins dating back to the Etruscan period, much of what you see today is thanks to the work of the Renaissance artists. Nowhere is this more evident that in Montepulciano’s main piazza – the Piazza Grande. Here, the 14th century Palazzo Comunale was given a Renaissance makeover by Michelozzo, in a sort of homage to the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. And the Palazzo Contucci which stands opposite was designed by Italian Renaissance architect Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. He also designed the Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi in this square. And the Duomo was also constructed in the Renaissance period of the 16th century.
No visit to Montepulciano would be complete without also sampling some of the Sangiovese wines grown in this area. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Tuscany’s greatest red wines and has been awarded DOCG status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). There are shops in the centre where you can enjoy a tasting. Alternatively, since the grapes are grown to the east and north east of the town, if you head into the countryside, you could also visit one of the wineries in person for a tasting.

You’ll find Montepulciano busiest when it’s hosting one of its annual festivals or events. There is something to enjoy every season. In February, things kick off with the annual costumed procession of the Carnevale. This is swiftly followed by a two day festival each March to celebrate all things chocolate! Then, over the Easter weekend, visitors can enjoy a classical music festival with a series of concerts performed in the magical settings of Montepulciano’s churches and palazzos.
May is arguably the busiest time in Montepulciano, due to the fact that both the Fiera di Sant’ Agnese and Cantine Aperte take place in this month. The former is a historical procession through the streets whilst the latter is when wine cellars throw open their doors and offer guided tours and tastings to visitors.
Events continue across the Summer months. In late July, there is the Giostra del Saracino as well as the Barvio delle Botti in August. One of our favourite events, this is when you’ll find barrel racing competitions taking place between the eight contrada.
In the Autumn, you can enjoy the Olive Oil and Autumn Flavours Festival. You enjoyed the wine in May and now you have the opportunity to sample the olive oil!
And finally, stay in one of our Montepulciano villas in December and you can enjoy the Christmas market which fills the Piazza Grande each year. A temporary ice skating rink and other attractions are also set up to ensure is full of festive cheer!
There is no bad time to visit Montepulciano! Our favourite time to stay in one of our Montepulciano villas is in the late Spring to coincide with Cantine Aperte, in the Summer to coincide with Barvio delle Botti or in the early Autumn after the olive harvest so that we can sample the new oil.
Weather wise, in the Summer you can expect plenty of hot, sunny days with daytime temperatures easily rising up to 30℃. Spring and Autumn can still see very pleasant temperatures allowing you to both relax by your Tuscany villa pool or to sightsee without getting up too much of a sweat! And, whilst daytime temperatures may be cooler across the Winter requiring you to wrap up warm, you can still expect plenty of dry days and plenty of sunshine.
