We all know that travelling can be stressful. However hopefully this Lake Maggiore travel information guide will help take the stress out of your travel arrangements. Maybe you’re searching on information on how to get to Lake Maggiore. Or perhaps you’re wondering how to get out and about once you’re there. Either way, this travel information should help you get from A to B without any stress.
Lake Maggiore is served by three main airports – Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate and Milan Bergamo. The nearest of these is Milan Malpensa which is approximately an hours drive from all the Italy villa rentals that Bookings For You offer holidaymakers in this area. Milan Linate tends to be around ninety minutes away from our holiday villas and apartments. Milan Bergamo is nearer a two hour drive away. That said, if you want to break up your journey, the old town of Bergamo is well worth a visit if you fancy extending your stay for a day or two.

Once there, there is a fantastic boat service taking you around all the beautiful towns and villages on Lake Maggiore. Boats are frequent but the timetable does change depending on the time of year. Each local tourist information office will be able to give holidaymakers a copy of the timetable. They can also provide you with any additional Lake Maggiore travel information that you may need. Alternatively, you can view times and prices at the Lake Maggiore boat network website. Journeys tend to cost just a few euros and it offers great value for money.
If you’re part of a larger group and are looking to hire your own boat to get around the lake during your stay, then there are a few companies we can recommend. Firstly, Get Your Guide have a number of boat trips on Lake Maggiore. These are suitable both for small and large groups so it’s a great starting point.
If you’re part of a much larger group, then it’s also worth taking a look at Eco Party Boat. They have boats to hire which can accommodate up to 30 people. They can organise personalised excursions just for you. It’s the perfect option if you’re wanting to party on the lake or looking to mark a special occasion. Another option if you’re looking for a boat trip on Lake Maggiore with a skipper is Lago Maggiore cruises. And finally, there is Sailbox, an innovative company offering a sailboat share service.
Another option to get around Lake Maggiore by train. The train is certainly a great option to use if you want to visit Milan during your stay. It’s also a great way to get from the airport to the lake if you don’t want to hire a car. If you want to explore the railway travel information for Lake Maggiore, then all the train times can be found at Trainline. You can also book tickets for Italian trains at Trainline.
Unfortunately, once on the lake, other methods of public transport aren’t as easy to navigate. Taxis can prove very difficult to find, particularly for short journeys, so definitely book one in advance if you need to head somewhere. We can certainly help organise taxi transfers from the airport to Lake Maggiore for clients that book their Italian Lakes villa rental with us.
Buses aren’t always as frequent on Lake Maggiore as in other area of Italy either so it’s worth hiring a car. That’s unless your Italian Lakes villa or apartment is within walking distance of a boat terminal. If staying in the area of the lake around Stresa, then there is a great bus network – Alibus – which will take you from Milan Malpensa airport to Lake Maggiore. Tickets must be booked in advance and the service runs from April to October, not all year round.
Bookings For You are proud to work with Auto Europe to offer guests competitive rates on their car rental in Italy.
If hiring a car you may also want to consider taking out car hire excess insurance. Whilst the car hire companies in Italy are excellent, they can often charge their customers a high excess. That means that, in the event of an accident, damage or theft, your car rental company will most likely charge you up to your excess amount to repair or replace the vehicle. As a result, we advise our clients to think about taking out excess insurance on their car hire.
When taking out car hire excess insurance, you can opt to pay a daily rate. Alternatively, you can choose an annual policy to cover you on all your yearly car hire rentals (not just your holiday in Italy). You’ll usually find that an annual policy still costs less than it would cost you to pay the car hire company to waive the excess charges on your Italy holiday rental. In the event of accident, theft, broken windows or tyre damage, the car rental company will still charge your card. However, the insurance company will then reimburse you after you’ve made a claim.
