Towns & Cities in Tuscany

Where to stay for your luxury holiday in Chianti

Sitting between Florence and Siena, Chianti is not actually defined by its geography but is actually a reference to an Italian DOCG wine produced in seven of Tuscany’s provinces. Marked by Vinci in the west and Rufina in the east, it stretches more than 100 miles from the north to Siena in the south. With such diversity, a luxury holiday villa in Chianti can vary depending on what you want to get up to on your Italian getaway.

Greve in Chianti

Considered the gateway to the wine region, Greve in Chianti is a vibrant hub and a fantastic base for a luxury holiday. Staying near this historic town allows you to easily explore its unique, triangular Piazza Matteotti, lined with local shops and exceptional Italian-style wine shops. It has the perfect blend of rural tranquillity and local life, placing you right at the heart of the annual autumn wine festivals.

Castellina in Chianti

Located on a hilltop, Castellina in Chianti is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Choosing a luxury holiday villa near Castellina offers a more relaxed environment, rich in Etruscan history. The town features a beautifully preserved medieval walkway, Via delle Volte, hidden beneath the walls, where you can stroll to local trattorias and fine dining spots.

Radda in Chianti

For those looking for a luxury holiday in Chianti with postcard-perfect views of rolling hills, Radda is the perfect location. This ancient walled village retains its authentic medieval layout and commands dramatic vistas over the valley. It is an exceptional setting for a secluded luxury holiday, offering a slower pace of life where you can tour nearby boutique vineyards and enjoy lunches in sun-drenched squares.

Things to do on a luxury holiday in Chianti

Driving through the Chianti countryside is a perfect way to spend a day in what is often affectionately referred to as Chiantishire. This is some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere in Italy. Stop at the small hilltop towns and villages as you pass and just soak up the atmosphere.

Of course, no luxury holiday to the Chianti region would be complete without enjoying a wine tasting or winery visit. Chianti wines are red wines made using the Sangiovese grape.

Whatever you want to sample on your luxury holiday to Chianti, you will have the choice between enjoying a wine tasting at a small, traditional, family-run winery or a larger, contemporary setting such as the Antinori winery offers.

However, it’s not just wines on offer in Chianti. The region is also famous for its olive oil. Over 400,000 olive trees are grown in this area to produce extra virgin olive oil. Enjoy an olive oil tasting accompanied by some delicious local meats, cheeses and bread to soak it all up.

What does the ‘Black Rooster’ symbol mean on Chianti wines?

The Black Rooster is an extremely important symbol for all Chianti Classico wine producers. The symbol dates back hundreds of years to the Middle Ages. So the story goes, following decades of war between the Republic of Florence and Siena, the two sides sought an end to the fighting. They agreed that, at the crowing of a rooster, a knight from each side would leave their homes and the border would be drawn at the point where they met. The Sienese people chose a white rooster to wake their knight at dawn. In the days prior to the event, they ensured it was well fed and treated to all possible comforts. In contrast, the Florentines chose a black rooster and put the bird in an uncomfortable cage with little to eat. The result was that, by the time the day of the race came, the black rooster was so hungry that he started crowing before dawn. The Florentine knight therefore got a head start on his rival, and the two horsemen met just a few kilometres outside Siena, which is where the border was drawn. All that visitors need to know now is that the Black Rooster is a clear sign of quality, indicating that the wine was produced within the Chianti Classico territory. These wines must use at least 80% Sangiovese grapes. The remaining 20% can be made up of other grape varieties, and these can be either native or international.
