We all know that travelling can be stressful. But hopefully our guide to travelling in Puglia will help to ease the stress out of your journey.
Puglia has two main airports serviced from the UK – Brindisi and Bari. Unfortunately there are not many flights leaving from the UK outside the main London airports, but British Airways and Easyjet fly to Bari and Brindisi respectively from London Gatwick and Ryanair flies to both destinations from London Stansted.
You may also want to consider flying into Naples as it’s only a 3-4 hour drive across from Naples to the region. This certainly opens up a number of other options. For example, Easyjet flies to Naples from Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Stansted and Liverpool, whilst Monacrh flies from Luton and Macnchester.
Once in Puglia, car hire is certainly recommended if you are to make the most of your stay. Much of Puglia is extremely rural and public transport in these more rural areas can be limited and taxis can be both expensive and rare. Do remember that many of the inland roads are quite windy and slow so allow time to get around.
Another option to get around is by train. The larger towns and cities in the region certainly have train stations and Foggia, Bari and Lecce all have a good network of train services connected to other major towns in Puglia. Using the train can be an economical way to travel around the region, particularly if you are flexible on the time of day you choose to travel at. Train times can be found at www.trenitalia.it. As well as the state network of trains, there are also some private train lines that run through the Valle d’Itria and which will take you to Martina Franca and Alberobello. For more information take a look at their site www.fseonline.it.
For those areas that trains don’t reach, try the bus network instead. Details of routes can be found at their website – www.sitabus.it.
Taxis can prove very difficult to find so definitely book one in advance if you need to head somewhere. If you have booked to stay in one of our Puglia villas or apartments, we can of course help with this for you.
