Lecce

Lecce is the southernmost of Puglia’s six regions. It is home to a number of towns and villages. These include Lecce itself, Gallipoli, Nardo, Maglie and Otranto.

Lecce is a particularly beautiful city. It’s not surprising that it is often affectionately referred to as the Florence of the South. Its Baroque architecture is breathtaking. However its history certainly goes back much further than the 16th century period of Spanish rule under which the Baroque architecture flourished. And visitors today can find plenty of evidence of this earlier past, not least in the Roman remains that it is home to.

The Lecce region’s other cities are just as worth of a visit too. For example, Otranto is Puglia’s easternmost city and is home to the Castello Aragonese and the Cattedrale dell’ Annunziata. This is one of the largest churches in Italy and sits at Otranto’s highest point. Otranto is also surrounded by some of Puglia’s most stunning countryside.
