Towns & Cities in Taranto
Grottaglie
Grottaglie is famous for its centuries-old tradition of ceramics. Visitors today can still visit its ceramics quarter where dozens of artisan workshops sit within caves and buildings carved into the rock. Watch local potters at work, browse the colourful handmade ceramics and visit the museum to learn more about the history of the trade.
Laterza
Laterza sits next to the Gravina di Laterza, a dramatic and spectacular 12 km long ravine rich in vegetation and filled with hiking trails. Like Grottaglie, it also has a long tradition of ceramics. Examples of its distinctive blue and white majolica can be found in the Museum of Maiolica in the Palazzo Marchesale.
Manduria
Surrounded by vineyards, Manduria is most famous for its production of Primitivo di Manduria wines. However, it is also home to one of Italy’s most important archaeological parks. Here you will find the Fonte Pliniano Cave as well as a necropolis with more than 2000 Messapic tombs dating back to the 6th to 2nd centuries BC.
Martina Franca
The largest town in the Valle d’Itria, Martina Franca is filled with Baroque mansions, churches, elegant arches and monuments. The most famous of these is the Palazzo Ducale, a 300-room palace situated close to the Piazza Plebiscito and the Basilica di San Martino in the heart of the town.

The city of Taranto has received mixed press over the years. Its historic centre has a certain charm to it. But it is also home to a huge commercial and military port. The factories, ironworks and oil refineries that this brings in its wake, simply aren’t conducive to tourism. As a result, we recommend you choose a luxury villa in the much more scenic Taranto countryside or along Taranto’s stunning coastline.
