Best areas to stay in during a luxury holiday in Rome

Rome truly needs no introduction. The fifth most visited city in Europe, it sat at the heart of the Roman Empire and is now a living museum of over 3000 years of art, culture and architecture. As a result, there are many fantastic locations to choose as your base when planning a luxury holiday to Rome. Here are some of our favourites:

Rome apartments

Prati

Found just north of the Vatican, Prati is an elegant, wide-boulevarded residential neighbourhood known for its Art Nouveau architecture, upscale shopping, and proximity to St. Peter’s Basilica. It’s perfect for a luxury holiday that’s slightly removed from the tourist spots while still being close to central landmarks.

Centro Storico

The heart of Rome’s historic centre is ideal for travellers who want world-famous sights, high-end shopping along Via dei Condotti, and fine dining just steps away. Staying around Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, or the Spanish Steps puts you within walking distance of the city’s most romantic cobblestone avenues and baroque fountains.

Things to do on a luxury holiday in Rome

There is so much to see and do while on a luxury holiday in Rome that, even if you had a week in the city, you would barely be able to scratch the surface. In fact, with so much to see and do in Rome, it’s almost impossible to know where to start. But don’t worry, we are here to help!

Visit world-famous landmarks

A good place is Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain. Always head here early in the morning before the piazza fills with other holidaymakers. From here, it’s just 10 minutes on foot to the Pantheon. This Roman monument dates back to 120 AD. The burial place of artist Raphael as well as a number of Italian kings, its impressive 43 metre dome sits unsupported, with a hole in its centre to let in light.

An alternative starting point to your Rome apartment stay is the Colosseum and the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The Colosseum is Rome’s most iconic landmark, offering an incredible glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Rome

Walk around Vatican City

Next on your list of things to do in Rome must be a visit to Vatican City. This is where you will find St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, which are in turn home to Michelangelo’s famous ceiling frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. We recommend you climb to the top of St Peter’s Dome to enjoy the marvellous views over the city.

Go shopping in Rome

As with any city, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy some shopping in Rome too. The area around the Spanish Steps is where you’ll also find the high-end designer clothing brands along with small and exclusive boutique shops and luxury labels. Head specifically to Rome’s Via dei Condotti for the best shopping. Or visit Rome’s many markets to enjoy the best of Italian food and crafts.

On a Sunday, you will find a superb flea market at Porta Portese in the Trastevere district of the city. You’ll also find a few food stalls here too. But avid foodies may prefer the Campo de’ Fiori market to buy some of the best fresh produce in the city. This market has been in existence since 1869, making it one of Rome’s oldest markets. Other markets in Rome include Mercato Monti and the Testaccio market.

Experience the natural beauty of Rome

If the weather is nice, it’s also well worth visiting Rome’s many parks and green spaces while on a luxury holiday. The parkland in Villa Borghese stretches for over 100 acres, while one third of the Vatican is made up of perfectly manicured gardens that can be visited on a guided tour.

Alternatively, there are the smaller but no less charming Pincio Hill gardens or the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Gardens) with their panoramic views over the city.

Our guide to spending 48 hours in Rome will provide more inspiration if you’re planning a trip to Italy’s most beautiful city, and our guide to Rome with kids will help if you’re visiting with children.

When to visit Rome for a luxury holiday

Just as there is no shortage of things to see and do in Rome, there is arguably no bad time to visit the city either. After all, even if the weather isn’t on your side, there are plenty of things to do in Rome when it’s raining.

  • Spring (April to June): Spring is one of the best times to visit Rome. Temperatures are pleasantly warm for walking, and the city’s historic parks and gardens bloom with vibrant colour.
  • Summer (July and August): Be prepared for soaring temperatures. Temperatures in the city in July and August can easily exceed 30 degrees, but it can feel even hotter. Plan accordingly – try to visit outdoor sites in the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Autumn (September and October): Autumn brings warm, comfortable weather and vibrant fall foliage in the city’s parks. It is an ideal season for comfortable outdoor walking tours and outdoor dining.
  • Winter (November to March): Sightseeing can be more pleasant when it’s that bit cooler – just wrap up warm, and you will still be able to enjoy exploring the city on foot. Plus, you’ll typically find visitor numbers much lower, meaning less need to queue.

Frequently asked questions about booking a luxury holiday apartment in Rome

How far in advance should I book tickets for major Roman sights?

We recommend booking tickets as soon as they are released. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tickets are released 30 days in advance. Since Colosseum tickets give you a specific time slot, booking early means you can choose a time that suits you. The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and Galleria Borghese also require careful planning. Book at least 3-4 weeks in advance if you can.

Can I drive or park near my Rome apartment rental?

We never recommend driving in Italy’s cities. Traffic in Rome is notoriously chaotic, and driving is stressful and Italian drivers can seem aggressive to those not used to it. Parking in central Rome is also nearly impossible. And, in any case, much of the historic centre is a Zona Traffico Limitato (ZTL). If you find yourself in one without a permit, you’ll get a hefty fine.

How do I get to central Rome from the airports?

From Rome Fiumicino Airport, take the Leonardo Express train, which runs every 15 minutes from the airport to Roma Termini and takes just 30 minutes. Alternatively, jump in an official white taxi. Drivers must charge a fixed fee between the airport and Rome’s historic centre, but traffic often makes the journey closer to 50 minutes. From Rome Ciampino, you will need to take a shuttle bus from the airport into the city centre instead. Or, we recommend a taxi. The 30-minute journey will cost 40 euros.
