Umbria is one of my favourite regions in Italy. Writing about the best villas in Umbria has reminded me of just how much this region has to offer. Whilst I love the hustle and bustle of a big city, I’m much more of a country girl deep down. Not surprising then that I am drawn back to Italy’s cuore verde (green heart) time and time again. There is something quite magical about Umbria’s rural landscape and charming hilltop towns. Don’t get me wrong. I love the atmosphere of the big cities of neighbouring Tuscany. Who doesn’t like Florence, Siena or Pisa?! But the smaller Umbrian towns such as Montefalco, Spello, Bevagna and Orvieto have a gentler, quieter beauty that really appeals to me. As I have got older (and as day to day life has got busier and as I have more and more demands on my time), I think I probably have a more pronounced appreciation of the slower pace of Umbrian life. It’s somewhere you can just appreciate the simple beauty that surrounds you, a place where you can really soak up the culture and food and, quite frankly, a place where you can just BE!
