For those who don’t want to hire a car during their stay, regular trains run from Milan to Como. Train times and routes can be found at www.trenitalia.it. Como has two train stations – Como San Giovanni and Como Lago. The latter is the most central. Station Como San Giovani is a short distance out of town but it is possible to walk from there or, alternatively, there are a number of buses you can catch from the station to the centre of town.
Trains also run from Milan and Bergamo up the Eastern shores of Lake Como from Lecco to Varenna and Colico.
Overnight sleeper trains run from Amsterdam via Dusseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt and Basel stopping at Como San Giovanni on their way to Milan. Similar train routes also operate during daylight hours.
There is a fantastic boat service taking you around all the beautiful towns and villages on the lake. Boats are frequent but the timetable does change depending on the time of year. Each local Tourist Information office will be able to give holidaymakers a copy. Alternatively, you can view times and prices at the website. (www.navigazionelaghi.it)
Regular buses run up the Western shores of the lake from Como to Menaggio whilst trains cover the Eastern shore from Lecco to Varenna and Colico.
If you have hired a car for your stay, do be aware of the roads. They tend to be both narrower and busier than on Lake Maggiore. If you don’t need a big car, then it’s definitely easier with a small vehicle both for driving and parking.
Taxis can prove very difficult to find so definitely book one in advance if you need to head somewhere.
