About Rome

Rome truly needs no introduction. The fifth most visited city in Europe, it sat at the heart of the Roman Empire and is now a living museum of over 3000 years of art, culture and architecture. Since 1980, it has also been one of Italy’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is famous for its ancient ruins, stunning piazzas, magnificent churches and, of course, the Vatican City.

What to see and do in Rome

There is so much to see and do in Rome that, even if you had a week in the city, you would barely be able to scratch the surface. In fact, with so much to see and do in Rome, it’s almost impossible to know where to start. But we think a good place is at Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain. Always head here early in the morning before the piazza fills with other holidaymakers. From here, it’s just 10 minutes on foot to the Pantheon. This Roman monument dates back to 120 AD. The burial place of artist Raphael as well as a number of Italian kings, its impressive 43 metre dome sits unsupported, with a hole in its centre to let in light.

An alternative starting point to your Rome apartment stay is the Colosseum and the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The Colosseum is Rome’s most iconic landmark, offering an incredible glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Rome.

Rome apartmentsNext on your list of things to do in Rome must be a visit to the Vatican City. This is where you will find St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, which are in turn home to Michaelangelo’s famous ceiling frescoes in the Sistene Chapel. We recommend you climb to the top of St Peter’s Dome to enjoy the marvellous views over the city.

As with any city, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy some shopping in Rome too. The area around the Spanish Steps is where you’ll also find the high end designer clothing brands along with small and exclusive boutique shops and luxury labels. Head specifically to Rome’s Via dei Condotti for the best shopping. Or, visit the many markets in Rome to enjoy the best of Italian food and crafts. On a Sunday, you will find a superb flea market at Porta Portese in the Trastevere district of the city. You’ll also find a few food stalls here too. But avid foodies may prefer the Campo dei Fiori market to purchase some of the best fresh produce in the city. This market has been in existence since 1869, making it one of the oldest markets in Rome. Other markets in Rome include Mercato Monti and the Testaccio market.

And, of course, there are numerous museums in Rome too. Art lovers will delight in the Borghese Gallery, home to works by Raphael, Caravaggio and Bernini. The Capitoline Museums are also another highlight of the city for us. And enjoy just exploring Rome’s streets and its bustling piazzas, from the Piazza Navona to the Piazza del Popolo.

If the weather is nice, then it’s also well worth visiting the many parks and green spaces in Rome too. The parkland in Villa Borghese stretches for over 100 acres whilst one third of the Vatican is made up of perfectly manicured gardens which can be visited on a guided tour. Alternatively, there are the smaller but no less charming Pincio Hill gardens or the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Gardens) with their panoramic views over the city.

Our guide to spending 48 hours in Rome will provide more inspiration if you’re planning a trip to Italy’s most beautiful city as will our guide to Rome with kids if visiting with children.

When to visit Rome

Just as there is no shortage of things to see and do in Rome, there is arguably no bad time to visit the city either. After all, even if the weather isn’t on your side, there are plenty of things to do in Rome when it’s raining.

Rome apartmentsThat said, we recommend you visit Rome in the Spring or Autumn. Between April and June and across September and October, temperatures should typically be most pleasant for sightseeing. Moreover, in the Spring, Rome’s parks are at their best, blooming with colour whilst later in the year the Autumn foliage also makes them particularly colourful.

If you do visit Rome in the peak Summer months, you need to be prepared to cope with soaring temperatures. Temperatures in the city in July and August can easily exceed 30 degrees, but the city can feel even hotter than that. Plan accordingly – try and visit outdoor sites in the early morning or late afternoon.

Don’t rule out visiting Rome in the Winter months. Sightseeing can be more pleasant when it’s that bit cooler – just wrap up warm and you will still be able to enjoy exploring the city on foot. Plus you’ll typically find visitor numbers much lower meaning less need to queue.
