About Positano

Positano is widely regarded to be one of the Amalfi Coast’s most beautiful towns. Pretty, pastel-coloured houses and domed churches cling to its rocky slopes. These slopes lead down to the wide, black sandy volcanic beaches below. If you’re driving from Sorrento in the west, it will take you approximately 20 minutes to get to Positano. From Naples, the journey will take around 75 minutes. Alternatively, in the Summer months, you can reach it by boat.

Things to do in Positano

Positano villasEnjoy time spent wandering through Positano’s hillside streets. These are lined with a number of charming independent boutiques. Look out for some of Positano’s most famous products to take home with you as souvenirs. These include limoncello, custom made leather sandals and pezza di Positano. These are traditional clothes made from cotton, silk or linen. And pick up a Sfogliatella at Pinauro, a bakery famous for introducing this sweet treat to the town over two centuries ago.

You can learn more about the ancient history of Positano in the town’s museum. This is situated close to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The majolica-tiled dome of  the church is visitable almost everywhere you go in Positano, whilst the church itself is home to a Byzantine-inspired 18th century icon of a Black Madonna.

After that, cool off on Positano’s beach. The Spiaggia Grande stretches 300 metres, making it one of the largest along the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Expect plenty of glitz and glamour on the beach club here. And expect it to get busy too! If you’re looking to find a quieter spot to sunbathe, you may want to walk along the footpath that leads from the Spiaggia Grande to Positano’s Fornillo Beach. Or, alternatively, make the most of Positano’s sea taxi service. One of their small boats will transport you to one of the picturesque bays along the Amalfi Coast – Clavel, Cavone or Remmese – which can only be accessed from the water.

Positano villasBefore you leave, make sure you head to the top of Positano too and climb up Montepertuso. The terrific views not just down over Positano but also nearby Praiano will more than reward you for the effort.

Of course, a stay in one of our Positano villas is also a great base from which to enjoy all the things to do on the Amalfi Coast as a whole and to explore all the other towns and villages on the Amalfi Coast.

When to visit Positano

Positano’s reputation as being one Italy’s most beautiful towns does mean that it can get extremely busy, especially in the peak Summer months. At this time. it’s also common for cruise ships to bring visitors in each day. As a result, visit in the Summer and you should expect its streets to be crowded. If you want to explore when it’s quieter, opt for the Spring or Autumn again.
