Villas in Arezzo

Arezzo is a stunning city in the south east of Tuscany. It is also the capital of the Tuscan province of the same name. The city’s roots date as far back as the Etruscan period. These days, the city is split into two parts – the more modern district at the base of the hill and the older, historic district at the top. It’s the latter where we encourage visitors to spend their time. Here you will discover the main square – the Piazza Grande – used for a number of scenes in the moving 1997 Academy Award-winning film Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni. As well as its rich historical and cultural heritage, it also has an incredibly rich artistic heritage too. The Church of San Francesco is home to stunning frescoes by Piero della Francesca whilst the elegant loggia in the main square was designed by Vasari.

All these Arezzo villas and apartments lie within the Arezzo province of Tuscany. Find your perfect Areezzo villa with Bookings For You.

About Arezzo

Arezzo is a city in the south east of Tuscany. It is also the capital of the Tuscan province that bears the same name. (Tuscany is separated into 10 different provinces in total, the others being Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. It has a long and rather illustrious history that dates back to the Etruscan and Roman periods. However, more recently it was also an important city and area during the Renaissance period. These days, the city itself is divided into 2 parts – a lower, modern part and the older historic part at the top of the hill. It’s here that we suggest you spend your time.

Things to do in Arezzo

Arezzo villasThanks to its importance during the Renaissance period, visitors can enjoy the opportunity to admire a number of important artistic sites in Arezzo. Arezzo is famous for the frescoes by Piero della Francesca which can be found in the Basilica of San Francesco. Incidentally, there is an additional fresco by Piero della Francesca in Arezzo’s Duomo. Also of note is the crucifix by Cimabue in the Basilica of San Domenico.

The other important artist whose works can be found in Arezzo is Giorgio Vasari. Vasari was actually born and lived in Arezzo. Whilst his most famous works are to be found in Florence – the frescoed interior of the Duomo and the Vasari Corridor – there is plenty of evidence of his work in Arezzo today. Not least is the beautiful loggia designed by Vasari, which is situated on the northern side of the main Piazza Grande. You can also see some of his work at the Casa di Giorgio Vasari, a house that Vasari rebuilt in 1547 and which he decorated with elaborate schemes inspired by both mythology as well as personal experience. Vasari was not just a painter and architect though. He was also a writer and poet, and the author of Lives of the Most Excellent Italian Architects, Painters and Sculptors.

Events in Arezzo

One of our favourite events in Arezzo actually takes place monthly. This is the Fiera Antiquaria, a huge antiques market in the central Piazza Grande which takes place on the first weekend of every month.

Arezzo villasThe events which Arezzo is most famous for though are perhaps the Concorso Polifonico Guido d’Arezzo and the Giostra del Saracino, a game of chivalry dating back to Medieval times. These take place at the end of August and and on the first Sunday in September respectively. The latter is a full day of celebrations involving processions with participants attired in Medieval dress, culminating in a spectacular jousting tournament.

Finally, visitors will find a number of smaller music events hosted in the city throughout the year. These include the Concorso Polifonico Guido d’Arezzo, an international choral competition, and PLAY Arezzo Art Festival, a rock music festival. Also worth looking out for is Pomeriggi Musicali, a series of small but free concerts held in various churches, museums and libraries in Arezzo across January to June.
