Arezzo is a stunning city in the south east of Tuscany. It is also the capital of the Tuscan province of the same name. The city’s roots date as far back as the Etruscan period. These days, the city is split into two parts – the more modern district at the base of the hill and the older, historic district at the top. It’s the latter where we encourage visitors to spend their time. Here you will discover the main square – the Piazza Grande – used for a number of scenes in the moving 1997 Academy Award-winning film Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni. As well as its rich historical and cultural heritage, it also has an incredibly rich artistic heritage too. The Church of San Francesco is home to stunning frescoes by Piero della Francesca whilst the elegant loggia in the main square was designed by Vasari.

EXCELLENT Based on 50 reviews Miki Leibowitz2024-10-20Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Cassina Rossa in Forte Dei Marmi was a perfectly located villa to enjoy all things Forte & truly feel like a local! The communication with the owner and her representatives was so easy and they were VERY helpful with anything we needed during our stay. We so enjoyed waking up every morning and either taking our coffee intown while it was super quiet and watching everything wake up around us or on most mornings we rode the bikes that were supplied to us to the wonderful market that was literally down the street and picked up anything we needed fresh for the day. The kitchen was beautifully equipped and we made espresso most mornings and either sat outside on ground level patio or on the roof top overlooking the mountains. It was comfortable enough to have lunch and dinner at home a couple of times and fun setting a beautiful table with their pretty dishes, linens, etc. Having Bagno Vasco the very authentic classic beach club included was a dream and a big savings! Great food, easy location to bike or drive to and the position of our chairs, umbrella and sunbed right next to the sea was great. We were there for over 2 weeks and for a nominal amount he supplied us with their towels each day so we didn’t have to bring back and forth. The villa’s proximity to the center of town can’t be beat. It’s quiet enough to be a bit removed and beautiful to see the mountains whenever walking or riding home but so close to all the wonderful restaurants & very upscale & unique shops. Forte has such a unique vibe day and night especially on market days (Wednesday and Sunday). The markets are so full of clothing, housewares, etc that you’ll need to bring an extra bag or ship stuff home. People come from everywhere to take advantage of it. The location of Forte Dei Marmi is so central and close to other towns like Pietrasanta up in the hills which allows you to experience a completely different more typically Tuscan area within a short 15-20 min drive and it’s also very close to Lucca, Pisa & Carrara (where they get the marble) only 1 1/2 hours from Florence and Portofino if you are staying longer and want to take some wonderful daytrips. Forte Dei Marmi doesn’t have the dramatic coastline of the Amalfi coast but the beauty of looking one direction and seeing the beaches and looking the other and seeing the stunning mountains including Carrara is truly unique and offers its own special beauty. Another plus is that it is very flat so much easier than many Italian towns to walk and ride bikes which everyone does everywhere. It’s fun to see everyone (mostly Italians which we loved) fully dressed for dinner on bikes as it’s truly the chosen form of transportation for the young and old. We can’t wait to return!! Fabulous stay in Villa Assisi - a big villa with private pool in a hotel resort complex. It was very peaceful, despite a very central location, and the pool was a fantastic luxury given the super-hot temperatures. We were able to use the hotel facilities, such as the tennis court and bicycles, as well, so it felt like the best of both worlds. We were well looked after by Bookings for You too. Highly recommended. evan sohun2024-08-19Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. An amazing place. Arezzo is a city in the south east of Tuscany. It is also the capital of the Tuscan province that bears the same name. (Tuscany is separated into 10 different provinces in total, the others being Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. It has a long and rather illustrious history that dates back to the Etruscan and Roman periods. However, more recently it was also an important city and area during the Renaissance period. These days, the city itself is divided into 2 parts – a lower, modern part and the older historic part at the top of the hill. It’s here that we suggest you spend your time.
Thanks to its importance during the Renaissance period, visitors can enjoy the opportunity to admire a number of important artistic sites in Arezzo. Arezzo is famous for the frescoes by Piero della Francesca which can be found in the Basilica of San Francesco. Incidentally, there is an additional fresco by Piero della Francesca in Arezzo’s Duomo. Also of note is the crucifix by Cimabue in the Basilica of San Domenico.
The other important artist whose works can be found in Arezzo is Giorgio Vasari. Vasari was actually born and lived in Arezzo. Whilst his most famous works are to be found in Florence – the frescoed interior of the Duomo and the Vasari Corridor – there is plenty of evidence of his work in Arezzo today. Not least is the beautiful loggia designed by Vasari, which is situated on the northern side of the main Piazza Grande. You can also see some of his work at the Casa di Giorgio Vasari, a house that Vasari rebuilt in 1547 and which he decorated with elaborate schemes inspired by both mythology as well as personal experience. Vasari was not just a painter and architect though. He was also a writer and poet, and the author of Lives of the Most Excellent Italian Architects, Painters and Sculptors.
One of our favourite events in Arezzo actually takes place monthly. This is the Fiera Antiquaria, a huge antiques market in the central Piazza Grande which takes place on the first weekend of every month.
The events which Arezzo is most famous for though are perhaps the Concorso Polifonico Guido d’Arezzo and the Giostra del Saracino, a game of chivalry dating back to Medieval times. These take place at the end of August and and on the first Sunday in September respectively. The latter is a full day of celebrations involving processions with participants attired in Medieval dress, culminating in a spectacular jousting tournament.
Finally, visitors will find a number of smaller music events hosted in the city throughout the year. These include the Concorso Polifonico Guido d’Arezzo, an international choral competition, and PLAY Arezzo Art Festival, a rock music festival. Also worth looking out for is Pomeriggi Musicali, a series of small but free concerts held in various churches, museums and libraries in Arezzo across January to June.
